We have reached the time of year when trees are sprouting new blooms, your polo-necks get replaced by light jumpers, and motivation for spring-cleaning your garage comes easier! Since it is spring, and time for renewal, I am proud to announce a new initiative by Stellenbosch Wine Routes, made possible by a new partnership with Sanlam Private Investments (SPI).

SPI is one of the fastest growing private client businesses in South Africa, and together we are taking Stellenbosch to Gauteng, in an unrivalled celebration of the finer things in life at Summer Place in Hyde Park. The aim is to introduce cultural enthusiasts from up North to one of the Cape Wineland’s finest cultural melting-pots.

SWR’s goal has always been to position Stellenbosch as the premium wine of origin area in South Africa. By building our brand in the Gauteng market, we will attract more and more people to our beautiful region, with more tangible economic benefits for the region’s wine industry as a result.

Named ‘Stellenbosch at Summer Place’, the first-of-its-kind event will allow a limited audience to sample Stellenbosch’s food and wine, expertly paired by award-winning winemakers and chefs, as well as art and music, on 10 November.

Daniël Kriel, SPI CEO, says the aim of the collaboration is to showcase one of South Africa’s most charming and popular regions. “SPI recently opened an office in Stellenbosch so the collaboration with SWR was a natural fit. Our intention is to use the event as a vehicle to increase our brand presence in Gauteng and our plan is to make this an annual event.”

He said that SPI’s client base of high net worth individuals are known to delight in the finer things in life and to consider wine and art, among other rare treasures, as investment vehicles. “We are excited to allow our clients and potential clients - as well as wine, food, art and music lovers – the chance to sample the best of an area which is well known for its culture, hospitality and spectacular natural beauty.”

Only the very finest of Stellenbosch’s culinary talent and varietals will be on offer. Gautengers will taste 200 of the finest wines, rub shoulders with 50 top Stellenbosch winemakers and sample fare from award-winning Stellenbosch chefs. The elegant rooms and spaces will be transformed into a unique wine and gourmet rendezvous, for guests to linger and indulge all their senses. To top it all off, talented Stellenbosch musicians Zamar, will add rhythm to this glamorous event.

Kriel says that art is an equally important feature of the programme. “Sanlam has one of South Africa’s oldest and most extensive corporate art collections and curator, Stefan Hundt, will exhibit select pieces at the event.”

Tickets for Stellenbosch at Summer Place cost R395 per head and include wine tasting and gourmet delight throughout the evening. For more information and ticket sales contact Christa at Tel: (021) 886 8275, or visit www.wineroute.co.za/summerplace.asp

Stellenbosch University’s Wine Society retained the Backsberg Vino Varsity Trophy on Friday 20 August with a stunning victory over the Universities of Cape Town and Wits. In a one-sided contest, South Africa’s major inter-university wine-tasting competition ended with Stellenbosch beating the other two teams in all three categories consisting of wine general knowledge, blind tasting and a presentation on their passion for wine.

Neil Bent, captain of the victorious Maties, said that his team performed well, despite the pressure of going into the Vino Varsity as favourites. “Having won the inaugural Vino Varsity held in 2009, we knew the other teams were going to up their game and that they were coming into the competition with no expectation or pressure,” says Bent. “Wits were also the unknown entity, as this was their first appearance at Vino Varsity and we did not know what to expect from them nor their high altitude palates.”

After a strong showing in the general knowledge section, which saw the teams having to each answer 15 wine-related questions, Wits and UCT were forced to play catch-up. Wits put in a strong showing in the blind-tasting section, narrowly losing to Maties who displayed an awesome knowledge of South African and international wines.

Stellenbosch’s irreverent, alternative presentation on what drives the wine society’s passion for wine also saw them winning this section, leaving them as outright winners.

“We stuck to our game-plan, which was to take the fight to the other teams in the first section, namely general knowledge,” says Maties team-coach Emile Joubert. “Having hit our straps in this section, we could go into the blind-tasting as a calm, focussed unit, while the pressure was on Wits and UCT. Neil Bent led from the front giving a true captain’s performance. His general knowledge was spot on and he mustered his troops well to ward off Wits in the blind-tasting. Neil’s commitment to a Spartan-like training regime in the off-season for him and his team also made Maties the fittest team by far.”

According to Simon Back, marketing manager for Backsberg and organiser of the Vino Varsity, Vino Varsity is proof of the vibrant wine culture at three of the country’s foremost universities. “The wine societies are playing a major role in promoting wine on their campuses, and Vino Varsity aims to assist in endorsing and promoting an awareness and love of wine among young South Africans,” says Back. “The success and popularity of this year’s contest underscores a need to make this a national competition incorporating a whole country of wine-loving students.”

The annual Helderberg Wine Festival always offers visitors a wide range of events over and above the usual wine tastings and this year’s festival, from Thursday, 21 October to Sunday, 24 October, is no exception.

With 30 cellars participating, each offering a special programme of events to suit its facilities, festival goers can expect spectacular scenery and stunning architecture as a backdrop to enjoying some of the best wines in South Africa.

A new event on the programme is the quaintly named “Vergenoegd Volkies & Vere Expo” where this historical winery just off the N2 are inviting all owners of a Volkswagen Beetle to the farm on Saturday, 23 October to participate in a mass Volksie exhibition! With the farm’s award-winning restaurant, the hundreds of runner ducks adding to the attraction, and the winery’s recent release of the full range of three wines in the Runner Duck range, what better way to spend a Saturday!

Action lovers can participate in a mountain bike race or long-distance running, go horse riding through stunning scenery with Hempies du Toit and end off with The Big Walk at Eikendal on Sunday morning.

Families are catered for with heaps of activities to keep kids entertained whilst parents enjoy wine tastings and great food and the younger set shouldn’t miss out on the popular crowd-pleasers like Friday night’s “Os-innie-Bos” at Annandale winery and the many other parties planned on Saturday night at the various wineries.

Die Bergkelder, the famous ‘cellar in the mountain’ and home of Fleur du Cap wines on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, has been re-opened after careful refurbishment to offer wine lovers a more intimate experience with the wines and their origins.

Officially opened in 1968 as the first bottle maturation cellar of its kind in the southern hemisphere, Die Bergkelder fulfilled the dreams of Dr Anton Rupert and Dr Alfred Baumgartner, directors of Distillers Corporation (SA) Limited, the owner of the property at the time. This major investment in a technologically advanced underground wine cellar for the production of quality wines was a major shift in focus for the organisation which until then had earned most of its income from brandy.

In the 1970’s, with Dr Julius Laszlo as visionary Cellarmaster, Die Bergkelder played a pivotal role in changing the face of the South African wine industry. Determined to produce world-class wines, he was one of the key protagonists in finding new plant material and encouraging grape-growers to introduce classic noble varietals to their vineyards such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

As a tribute to Dr Laszlo who passed away in July this year, a dedicated Laszlo Room for private tastings now takes pride of place in the refurbished cellar. In 2007 Fleur du Cap released an exclusive signature blend, Laszlo 2004, in his honour. Dr Laszlo was able to attend the launch and reminisce with old friends over dinner in Die Bergkelder, the very mountain cellar he helped to establish.

Die Bergkelder offers wine lovers Fleur du Cap tastings in the heart of the cellar, creating a close encounter with the wines and the history of the underground cellar, cut deep into the Papegaaiberg. Die Bergkelder also holds a special treat for wine collectors. Pick your favourite wine from the Vinotèque and allow it to mature under perfect conditions in the cellar until you can delight in your favourite bottle when the time is just right.

The museum, located next to the wine shop, will take you down memory lane discovering items from yester year including an old Italian horse drawn cart, wine press, bottles, glasses and openers.

Die Bergkelder is open Mondays to Saturdays for cellar tours and tastings. For more information or to make a booking, call Tel: (021) 809 8025 or visit www.fleurducap.co.za

This month I would like to welcome two new members to Stellenbosch Wine Routes.

Topaz Garagiste Wine was established in 2000. Clive Torr and Tanja Beutler started making wine at home in Somerset West. In 2002 they formed the Garagiste Movement of South Africa. As pioneers of the Garagiste Phenomena, they have now moved their winemaking facility to The Cellar at Delvera, offering others the opportunity to make their own garagiste wines with the Topaz team. The team is also offering edutaining wine courses through Topaz Wine Education, to bring back the fun into learning about wine. Topaz forms part of the Greater Simonsberg sub-route, and can be reached on tel : (082) 323 4336, or visit www.topazwines.co.za.

Set like a jewel in the golden triangle of South Africa's winelands, the 80ha vineyards of Lyngrove Wine Estate are the highly-prized source of the grapes that produce export-quality wines enjoyed by connoisseurs around the world.

With sweeping vistas of Table Mountain and False Bay, Lyngrove wines reflect nature's advantage of superior soils, gentle slopes and the perfect micro-climates for slowly ripening grapes with concentrated flavours, all under the cooling influence of breezes from the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Lyngrove offers a wide range of wines under the Lyngrove Collection, Reserve and Platinum labels. The farm forms part of the Helderberg sub-route.
