The wine industry is known for its myths, fables and elaborate stories. I have been told about numerous little dogs disappearing in the Helderberg area, with only discarded collars to be found. And paw prints as big as a man’s hand the only proof of who might be responsible ...

It is thus with great excitement that I write to tell you about the rare Cape Leopards spotted at one of our Helderberg member farms, Lourensford Estate.

The Cape Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) is an endangered sub-species of the African Leopard found only in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. They exhibit great variation in coat color, depending on location and habitat. Coat color varies from pale yellow to deep gold or tawny, and is patterned with black rosettes while the head, lower limbs and belly are spotted with solid black. They are smaller in the mountains of the Cape Provinces with males averaging 32-50 kg and females 20-30 kg.

Like most large mammals, they are generally absent in areas with a high population density of people. The leopard fills the role of the apex predator in the Western Cape ecosystem and acts as an “umbrella species” which, through its conservation, effectively help in the conservation of smaller, lower profile predators.

Its resilience to persecution notwithstanding, the leopard has suffered extensive range loss in the Cape and is now extinct in many areas of the province where it formerly occurred. The species is routinely and regularly removed from farms with little knowledge of population or genetic status, whether removals are sustainable or whether the factors giving rise to conflict are established.

The Cape Leopard Trust has been established and aims to optimally facilitate conservation of the Cape's predator diversity through simultaneously implementing conservation strategies, research projects and tourism initiatives. To date, research has taken place primarily in the Cederberg Mountains, which have been declared a World Heritage Site and are now also part of the Greater Cederberg Biodiversity Corridor. Further projects has now been established in the Swartberg/Gamka Corridor as well as in the Namaqualand region of South Africa.

As of late their focus is now on the spectacular Kogelberg and Hottentots-Holland Mountains surrounding Lourensford Estate and the outskirts of the City of Cape Town. Lourensford Estate has on own initiative started monitoring these animals roaming the 4500ha estate and surrounding mountainous regions.

Due to the farm’s success on capturing these animals on film, City of Cape Town Nature Conservation department in collaboration with the Cape Leopard Trust joined hands with the estate in this exciting project. The farm has released photographs of an alpha male Romeo, a pregnant female Juliet and a young female Susan. Further pictures will be released as other animals have been positively identified.

Lourensford Wine Estate, well know for wines of exceptional qualities, achieved championship status from the wine industry’s Biodiversity and Wine Initiative in 2006. Conservation efforts and continuous education of farm workers has now paid off and they are extremely proud to have these dazzling animals roaming their magnificent estate.

This month I would like to welcome two new members to Stellenbosch Wine Routes.

Bartinney is situated on the hellish high slopes of Helshoogte Pass and overlooks the picturesque Banghoek Valley in Stellenbosch. Passionately involved husband and wife team, Michael and Rose Jordaan, have renovated the historic farm with a vision to create excellent wines and reawaken the charm of the beautiful property.

The boutique cellar produces limited quantities of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay from low yielding vineyards positioned on cool elevated slopes. Cabernet Sauvignon is planted in deep red soils on the lower foothills. More than 5000 trees and fynbos, indigenous to the area, have been re-established on thirteen hectares of rehabilitated land previously pine and gum plantation.

Plans for a nursery to help restore and protect neglected slopes on the farm are on the cards as well as obtaining Champion status in the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) of which they are already a member. Visitors to the tasting room will be able to see spectacular 180degee views of the Banghoek Valley and Simonsberg and enjoy wines presented by the winemaker or owner. For more information, phone (021) 885 1013, or visit www.bartinney.co.za.

Fred and Rosmarie Ruest acquired a 27ha farm in the picturesque Devon Valley in 1998, naming it Kyburg Wine Estate. They named the farm after a castle, Kyburg, which overlooks a small historical village situated in the vicinity where they both grew up in Switzerland.

Winemaker Jacques Fourie is in charge of the range of Kyburg red wines. A self-catering cottage on the farm is available to rent. For more info, visit www.kyburgwine.com, or phone (021) 865 2876.

The Haskell Vineyards & Dombeya Wines Open Day for 2010 will be held on July 31.

Last year was a great success, with a terrific turnout making their way up Annandale Rd to join Rianie and her team for a tasting of every vintage of Dombeya ever made. This year they will be opening all the Haskell wines they have in bottle (along with a selection of Dombeya), including the unreleased Haskell IV 2007 and the new vintages of Haskell Aeon 2008 and Haskell Pillars 2008.

They will also be showing barrel samples of some new wines in the Haskell pipeline, plus holding a 'Name the Grape' competition. Whoever can correctly identify the grape variety across five barrel samples from the 2010 vintage will win a three pack of Haskell wines for their sleuthing!

The day kicks off at 11am, but at 10am, for the first 15 people to register, a Cabernet Sauvignon/Bordeaux Blend Masterclass will be held by Rianie in the Haskell cellar.

Places are limited, so please book early if you are interested. There is no charge for the Master class or entry to the Open Day. For more information, phone (021) 881 3895, or e-mail info@haskellvineyards.com.
