Change is never easy. Well, at least not for me. But I do admit that it can be a wonderful thing, altering the mind and opening up new possibilities. This year sees many new and exciting ventures for Stellenbosch Wine Routes, which I would like to share with you.

After 8 years at the helm of the Stellenbosch American Express® Wine Routes, Johann Krige announced his resignation as chairperson. Stellenbosch Wine Routes is the oldest wine route in South Africa, and was established in 1971.

          Ken Forrester & Annareth Bolton

In 2002 Johann was instrumental in overseeing the transition of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes from a co-op to a section 21 company; he also facilitated the process of obtaining American Express® as sponsor for the Wine Routes, a first for the South African wine industry.

Today there are 16 wine routes in South Africa, but Stellenbosch remains the most-visited and best-recognised brand among them. From humble beginnings the Stellenbosch American Express® Wine Routes now boasts five sub-routes, with 149 wineries as members, making it the biggest wine route in South Africa. When Johann started the transformation of the wine route in 2002, there was a mere 40 members who were part of the organisation. Except for the 149 wineries, the primary producers in the area also bought into the idea of marketing Stellenbosch collectively, and contribute to the organisation.

Johann will be followed by Ken Forrester as chairperson of the board. Ken has been a member of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes Board since 2002. Losing a visionary like Johann as chairperson is sad, and we are very grateful for what he has done to promote Stellenbosch as a world class wine tourism destination. We are however very fortunate to welcome well known restaurateur, winemaker and marketing guru Ken Forrester to the hot seat, leveraging the fact that he has been an active board member since the establishment of the inclusive wine route eight years ago.

One of Ken’s first projects will be overseeing the exciting new format of this year’s Stellenbosch Wine Festival, taking place from 1 to 5 July 2010. Welcoming all football fans descending on the Mother City, the Stellenbosch Wine Festival happens a month earlier this year to give them a chance to visit and experience South Africa’s first and foremost wine route – rich in diverse wine estates and cellars.

Stretching way beyond 90 minutes of action on the field, this year’s decentralised Stellenbosch Wine Festival will showcase its divine gems through an extensive network of shuttles between the participating farms. It is as simple as blowing a whistle... Just park your car at any of the allocated Park-and-Ride areas, or visit the Info Centre at Doornbosch in Stellenbosch, to purchase your festival pass and catch a shuttle to the wine farms of your choice. Participating farms are offering visitors wine tastings and untold activities including the opportunity to rub shoulders with your favourite winemakers.

Soccer enthusiasts will certainly not be left out in the cold as transport to and from this meandering wine extravaganza has been arrange from Cape Town. Visitors will also be able to experience the true history, culture and genuine hospitably of Stellenbosch and its wine routes in the comfort of their own vehicle and transport.

During the Festival’s five-day celebration, participating wine farms situated along the popular Stellenbosch American Express® Wine Routes will open their cellar doors for a wide-ranging kaleidoscope of family-friendly activities and attractions to entertain the merry crowds en route. This year’s programme ranges from adventurous day trips to interactive winemaking experiences, unbelievable restaurant and accommodation offerings to rare vertical and varietal wine tastings and exclusive winemaker dinners, each offering a different yet unique experience.

With more than 140 wine farms in and around the quaint town of Stellenbosch and various Park-and-Ride areas, it is your ticket to enjoy the true spirit of the Stellenbosch Winelands up, close and personal, without any hassle.

The Festival will also support the biggest sporting extravaganza to hit South African shores in true ‘Winelands style’. Idiom Wines are inviting visitors to participate in a fun Supporters’ Football Competition on their newly prepared mini-pitch in the middle of their vineyards in the Helderberg. This 5-a-side competition offers enthusiasts the chance to loosen up and emulate their heroes in a relaxed Cape Winelands setting, complete with friends and families cheering at the sidelines with their Vuvuzelas. For the less energetic, Idiom will host a Supporters’ Boules Competition on their brand new courts adjoining the soccer field, as well as wine tastings in their hillside bomas, overlooking the vineyards and False Bay in the distance.

Delheim, Jordan Wine Estate and Webersburg are some of the estates who will be carrying the fans’ interests at heart by having big screens showing the soccer.

Outdoor lovers can soak up the beauty of the Boland by signing up for game drives at Villiera, with plentiful birdlife and antelope to see whilst ending their scenic expedition with a Méthode Cap Classique tasting. Or why not saddle up at the new spectacular ‘cellar in the sky’ Waterkloof, with its arresting architecture and its panoramic views, for a picturesque wine tasting on horseback.

L’Avenir Estate goes all out French during the festival with a host of activities celebrating the culture, culminating with an awe-inspiring performance by The Matthew Kruger Band, South Africa’s very first composers and performers of original rock music in French, at the farm. Simonsig will also get their grapes and gourmet vibe going with live music offered at their estate throughout the duration of the festival.

The Stellenbosch Wine Festival has become a tradition during the winter months in Stellenbosch and is a popular destination for both local and international visitors. The 2009 extravaganza attracted more than 13 500 visitors with another record attendance anticipated this year.

Tickets for the Stellenbosch Wine Festival will be available on-line at R150 per person per day, and R500 for the Golden Pass for the entire duration of the festival. Under 18’s are free!

Wondering what to do with the children during school holidays? This Easter, over the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th of April, Warwick Wine Estate will be supplementing their fine wine- and gourmet picnic- offering by incorporating a ‘wonderland’ theme, inviting visitors to peer ‘through the looking glass’ and be immersed in a fantasy world. Free-fall into Warwick in Wonderland where one can make the acquaintance of some of Lewis Carroll’s iconic characters. Join Alice in her adventures in this psychedelic world… perhaps you will meet some of her contemporaries like the grinning Cheshire Cat or the time-obsessed March Hare who dashes past, announcing that he is ‘late for a very important date’?

Visitors to the estate will also rub shoulders with hero’s in the Warwick star-studded cast: The eccentric Professor Black (Warwick’s Sauvignon Blanc, named after the creator of a hybrid peach variety), Three Cape Ladies (Warwick’s blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the Cape's unique grape, Pinotage, named after three generations of Ratcliffe women), The First Lady (a Cabernet Sauvignon-driven blend, named after Norma Ratcliffe, this is a wine fit for the White House) and the Black Lady (a stellar Syrah only available at Warwick).

With jungle gyms, a jumping castle, and an Easter egg hunt, children are promised nothing short of a swashbuckling adventure at Warwick in Wonderland! And to put parents’ minds at ease, child-minders will be on duty to ensure children are taken care of. Parents and other guests can venture into the newly-renovated, chic tasting centre and sample wines from Warwick’s award-winning selection, purchasing these at cellar door prices.

The Warwick Gourmet Picnic - partnered with celebrity chef, Bruce Robertson - is a ‘must do’. This culinary offering affords patrons the option of unwrapping and sampling the contents of their picnic boxes at any one of a handful of ‘al fresco’ venues. Groups can book: private ‘Picnic Pods’ flanking the dam, dine in the Parisian-style ‘Courtyard’, or lounge on ‘The Lawns’ at leisure. Take the family or group of friends on a ‘Big 5 Safari’ a through the vineyards to the ‘Penthouse’ which boats a panoramic vista of the farm and surrounds.

Bookings are essential and can be made by phoning 021 884 3144, or visit www.warwickwine.com.

On Sunday 11 April, don your festive feathers and head out to Eikendal Estate for an all-day family feast for its popular Weintaufe Harvest Celebration.

What started out as an intimate ceremonial blessing to celebrate the end of the harvest at Eikendal more than 20 years ago, has evolved into a not-to-be-missed highlight on the social calendar, attracting a vibrant crowd each year. Families and friends can look forward to a merry blend of laid-back entertainment, local country food, wine tastings, vineyard tractor rides, a live music performance, and loads of fun for the kids, allowing Mom and Dad to chill out on the lawn.

After the baptism of Eikendal’s first wine of the 2010 harvest – the cellar’s flagship Chardonnay – visitors get to taste it straight from the barrel in celebration of the fruit of the vine. Known especially in Austria as a festival just after the wine harvest, Weintaufe literally means ‘wine christening’. A ‘godfather’ is usually chosen to name the first wine of the harvest.

Bring your picnic blanket and claim your spot for a magical ending to the weekend. Delicious food and wine will be on sale so why not swap the Sunday roast for a sublime afternoon under the oaks in the great company of Eikendal.

Entrance for adults is R60 per person and includes a complimentary glass and barrel tasting. Visitors under the age of 18 get in for FREE. Tickets will be available at Eikendal prior to the event or at the gates on the day. The gates open at 10am with the baptism of the new wine at 12h00.

For more information or general enquiries on the 2010 Eikendal Weintaufe contact the cellar on 021 855 1422 or send an email to info@eikendal.co.za.

The Financial Mail Wine Business Awards, now in their second year, were conceived to provide focus and recognition to those within the industry going the extra mile to deliver business results. There are no fewer than 15 wine awards in South Africa, and until the FM Wine Business Awards, all were focused squarely on the product in the bottle.

The constant quest for quality and product excellence is no bad thing. But as any savvy producer will tell you, a wine decorated with a plethora of awards that remains unsold in the cellar doesn’t pay the rent. So who has been excelling in marketing, branding, packaging, supply-chain management and all the other crucial facets in a successful wine business?

Competition in each category was fierce this year. “Entries were nearly double that of the inaugural competition (2008) and the standard of work submitted superb. It’s interesting to see, that once these Awards were launched and under way, how the old saying “competition is good for business” has so clearly played out in the industry,” remarked John Woodward, a partner in the Awards.

I would like to congratulate our Stellenbosch members, who were amongst the winners : Madame May Elaine de Lencquisaing (Glenelly) for Wine Personality of the Year, Graceland Vineyards for Best Design and Packaging, The Vineyard Connection for Independent Retailer of the Year (second year), and Kleine Zalze for Export Star (also second year). Well done to each and every one of you! For the full report, visit http://wine-extra.co.za/htm/special_report_march_2010.html.

This month’s winner of the Sundays in Stellenbosch competition is Parinita Jeaven from Cape Town. Congratulations! You have won a Sunday lunch for four people at Bilton’s Wine and Dine at the foot of the Helderberg, accompanied by a bottle of Bilton Wine.

To enter our competition, e-mail your contact details to info@wineroute.co.za. Good luck!
